Wishes for a new pebble on the beach of Ostend 2008

What can I wish you for the next year? More power and gold? Or should I say more of a real life of your own Work and freedom? Less taxes comes to mind. The world is accelerating at a brisk pace. Turbulence all over the bloody place, to be taken literally. The balance is delicate. Shall we all perish in the rush or shall we find nirvana in peace? Maybe we need the turbulence to be reminded how peaceful it could be if we all just did all we could to reach for it. If you ask me, last year was bad enough although history has seen worse. In any case, I wish you all a better 2008. It helps to keep repeating the same wishes every year.

occam's rule and Leonardo da Vinci: Keep it Simple but Smart

Two weeks ago, during a holiday in Venice, Italy I had the oppportunity to visit an exhibition with replica's of Leonardo's da Vinci's inventions. It was really amazing to see how this man on his own invented most of the basic concepts that we still use everyday.

Formal models help, but the essence is formalized thinking

In our increasingly interconnected world, we also depend to an ever-growing extent on sophisticated technological systems in our everyday environment. While it used to be enough to be a skilled and experienced practitioner, today our work is determined more and more by using sophisticated systems as tools to provide us with instant information and allow us to achieve results that were beyond reach just a few decades ago. While our skills are still important, such systems are no longer just tools but an integral facet of our lives and working environment. We depend on it every second and such systems must not only work as advertised, they must be robust, safe and secure as well. Not only are lives at stake, liability claims loom around the corner as well.

The future of engineering education: More questions than answers

As Open License Society researches about better methodologies for systems engineering, we pleade for unifying semantics. Semantics is about how we think and unified semantics is about finding the common concepts and ideas in diverse domains. Yes, the syntax and the terms might be different but when looked upon from a more abstract level, it is sometimes amazing to see how all concepts are related or even the same.
